Straightening Your Smile with Confidence

Introduction to Dental Braces

Though it might not seem that significant, dental braces are an advancement in technology that has allowed professionals to help thousands of people deal with many dental issues such as crooked teeth, overcrowding, misaligned bites, and gaps between their teeth. Through great orthodontic care many people are able to improve not only their oral health, but their self-confidence, and overall quality of life.

On this page, we would like to provide you with information about various types of dental braces, what to expect when getting dental braces, and maintaining your oral health with dental braces.

Types of Dental Braces

When it comes to braces there are a number of options to consider each with its own pros and cons to consider. Here’s a brief overview of the most popular four solutions:

  1. Traditional Metal Braces, are high in durability and very effective in treating various orthodontic issues. Advancements in technology have led to smaller and more discreet metal brackets, making them a popular choice for many patients.
  2. Ceramic Braces have a great aesthetic appeal, being less noticeable compared to traditional metal braces. Occasionally people experience staining and discoloration of ceramic brackets.  The best solution to avoid staining is to avoid foods that stain while also brushing and flossing 2 times a day.
  3. Lingual Braces are placed on the inner surface of the teeth, making them virtually invisible from the outside. While lingual braces tend to irritate the mouth more than traditional braces they can be an excellent option for those seeking a discreet treatment option.
  4. Finally, lets’ discuss Clear Aligners, such as Invisalign®, which have gained popularity for their nearly invisible appearance and removability. Clear aligners are different since they are made to come off in certain situations such as while eating or brushing.

The Process of Getting Dental Braces

Getting dental braces is a straightforward process with few surprises in it.

  1. We’ll start with the initial consultation, during which the orthodontist evaluates the patient’s oral health, takes X-rays and impressions, and discusses treatment goals and options.
  2. Next comes braces placement, where brackets are bonded to the teeth and archwires are attached. This is the part of the process where most people feel a great discomfort since pressure is being put on the teeth to actually move the teeth into new alignment. The best way to deal with this discomfort is to use pain medications, eat only soft foods for a couple of days, and use ice or warm salt water to wash your gums and provide relief.
  3. Regular adjustments need to be made to your braces as they move the teeth over time, which is why you will come in for monthly check ups (or more). Your orthodontist will fine-tune the braces to guide teeth into their proper positions.

Most braces treatments will take between 18 and 24 months. Duration of treatment is influenced by how complex your bite is, and what corrections are needed.

Maintaining Oral Health with Dental Braces

Finally, we would hope to emphasize the significance of maintaining optimal oral health throughout the braces-wearing period. Though you can’t see your teeth very well they can still get cavities and suffer from other common issues associated with braces, such as food getting stuck in them, soreness, and potential emergencies like a broken bracket.

The best thing to do is continue your regular and consistent oral health habits, brushing, flossing, eating correctly, avoiding too many sugary drinks and foods. When you keep up with these habits you can have a great experience living with braces and you’ll have great results afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental braces, also known as orthodontic braces or simply braces, are devices used by orthodontists to correct misaligned teeth and jaw problems. They consist of brackets, bands, and wires that apply gentle pressure to move teeth into their desired positions over time.

There are several types of braces, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces (placed on the backside of teeth), and clear aligners like Invisalign. Each type has its advantages, and your orthodontist will recommend the most suitable option based on your specific needs.

The duration of orthodontic treatment varies from person to person, depending on the complexity of the case. On average, braces are worn for 1 to 3 years. Factors such as age, the severity of misalignment, and compliance with wearing appliances can influence the treatment duration.

When braces are first applied and during adjustments, some discomfort or soreness may be experienced. However, this discomfort is usually mild and temporary, as your mouth adjusts to the braces. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate any soreness.

During active treatment, you will typically need to visit the orthodontist every 4 to 6 weeks for adjustments and progress checks. These appointments are essential for monitoring your progress and making necessary adjustments to the braces.

Yes, you can still participate in sports and play musical instruments with braces. However, it’s essential to wear a mouthguard during sports to protect your teeth and braces from potential injuries.

Certain foods, such as sticky candies, popcorn, and hard nuts, should be avoided to prevent damage to the braces. Additionally, minimize consumption of sugary and acidic foods and drinks to maintain good oral hygiene and protect your teeth from decay.

Regular oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. Brush your teeth after every meal and floss daily. Special interdental brushes or water flossers can help clean around the brackets and wires. Your orthodontist will provide specific care instructions.

Yes, adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment just as much as children and teenagers. There is no age limit for getting braces, and many adults opt for braces to improve their oral health and smile aesthetics.

Yes, after completing your braces treatment, you will be given a retainer to wear. Retainers help maintain the position of your teeth and prevent them from shifting back to their original positions. Compliance with retainer wear is essential for the long-term success of your orthodontic treatment.
